Frankie
Monday afternoon, I found myself back at the art store I’d discovered the week before. I’d managed to spend Saturday and Sunday studying and limited myself to only an hour a day of art, but by Monday I was burnt out on school work I hated. I made it to my classes and then I found my feet taking me to the art store without my brain registering what they were doing.
My brain caught up and steered me back to campus to wait outside my adviser’s door for fifteen minutes so I could talk to her about my schedule. I’d made a decision and I knew, I knew it was a bad one, but I also knew I was going to do it anyway. I was only going to get one shot and I was going to make it count.
“Frankie,” Professor Abramson said. She’d opened her door and stepped out without me noticing. “Come on in.”
I took a seat in front of her desk and tried to calm my breathing. I reminded myself this was the easy part, but I couldn’t forget this was a point of no return. Once I did this, there would be no going back.
“Did you decide what art class you want to take?”
I swallowed hard. “I want to take two art classes, actually. I want to withdraw from Economics and Business Marketing and I want to enroll in Art History 101 and Studio Art for non-majors.”
My adviser didn’t flinch, but gave me a warm smile. “I think that’s an excellent idea, Frankie. Considering how difficult Biology is, lightening your load in this way will help tremendously. That’s not to suggest either Art History or Studio Art will be easy courses, but hopefully they will be a bit less intense. Especially, since you seem genuinely interested in them. Interest makes a huge difference.”
She turned to her computer and typed in the changes. “Both Art History and Studio Art have space, so I’ll go ahead and enroll you in those and withdraw you from the other courses.”
“Thank you,” I said. “Would it be possible for you to wait to let my parents know about the change? At least, until it’s too late to switch back?”
Professor Abramson frowned. “I don’t like to keep information from parents, Frankie. And you should have a talk with them about what you want. They aren’t the ones who will be living with your choices.”
“I know. But these art classes are just a temporary detour. Just a little break. I’ll get back on track next fall, but for now, I’d like to do something fun and I don’t think my parents would understand. They never need breaks.”
She shook her head. “I have to tell your parents about the change in your courses, but the end date for withdrawing is tomorrow and I’ll be too busy to contact them until Thursday.”
“Thank you. I really appreciate it.”
“I hope you’ll appreciate it enough to have a frank conversation with your parents.”
“That’s why they call me Frankie,” I said.
